Art and Healing: How Art Therapy Can Help Divorced Couples Heal

Sometimes, marriages do not succeed. For some people, divorce can be a relief. But for most divorcing couples, it can be a very stressful and heartbreaking process. The stress level can even be higher if there are children involved.

Whether you wanted it or not, divorce can trigger all sorts of painful and unsettling feelings such as anger, guilt, grief, anxiety, shame and confusion. It can also turn your world upside down.

Art after divorce

At this stage, you might feel like you’re alone, but you don’t need to go through it on your own. You can reach out to your family and friends and talk to them about your situation. Or better yet, allow yourself to heal through art therapy.

Sometimes, it can be difficult for us to verbalize how we feel. There are times when we can’t seem to find the right words to express what’s going on inside us. One of the beauties of art therapy is that it allows a person to express himself or herself through any form of art.

You may be furious at your ex-spouse for causing you and your kids too much pain, but punching his face may not be your best option. Suppressing your feelings isn’t a good idea either. Your goal is to find an outlet, where you can freely express all those feelings so that you’re not holding them back. Art becomes your outlet.

You can pound some clay to release all the anger and frustration. You can draw or paint to relieve stress, communicate issues, conflicts and emotions. You can turn to symbols, colors and images to tell your story when words aren’t enough. In telling your story through art, you can find a path to healing, recovery and transformation.
